Boy are these guys in for a shock.

Five twenty something guys from Korea have taken it upon themselves to spread the message to the world that the Dokdo Islands, a small barren rock in the Eastern Sea, belongs to Korea. Marketing themselves as the "Dokdo Riders", these five boys from Korea are going to ride motorcycles through a number of countries to spread the gospel of Dokdo and grab themselves a spot in the weird Quixotic realm of Korean hero worship.

Here's the rub. What happens when they travel through these countries preaching their love for a bird-shit spattered, isolated clump of nothing out in the middle of the ocean and nobody gives a shit? Their first leg of the trip is supposed to be a ride from L.A. to Boston, stopping along the way at college campuses to drum up support for their cause. I pretty much guarantee that one of the first questions they get asked on any given campus in the States is "Wow, dudes. Riding motorcycles across the country? Cool. You dudes from Japan?"

These guys state that the don't really have any political views on the subject of Dokdo, or that the trip will do anything to solve the problem (although they do plan to hold seminars and discussions on the subject). Hmmm, so this is really just an ingenious way to get a free trip around the world paid for by corporate money and the charity of Korean organizations abroad.

I guess it beats cleaning up grease at a samgyupsal restaurant.

Cool thing about the Washington Post

Recently, in the last six months or so I'd guess, the Washington Post started posting blog links with articles and editorials posted on the online version of the paper. The blogs offer every perspective imaginable on any given issue, as well as being fairly entertaining to read.

And so it begins...

Well, another car from the American train of freedom and civil liberties is heading for derailment. The newly reconstituted Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has decided to revisit the law banning late term abortions. This despite that the constitutionality of such a law has been shot down by three seperate federal appeals courts due to the fact that the laws do not take into account the health of the mother.

Given the addition of "conservative" Justices Alito and Roberts to the court, this represents a long term threat to the right to choose should the ban be upheld. Of course, through out history, SCOTUS has been full of surprises for both conservative and liberal administrations that have had the opportunity to appoint justices to the bench. I'm certain Ronald Reagan at times seriously regretted putting Sandra Day O'Connor on the bench. Since the new court also unanimously found it constitutional for a religious group in New Mexico to use illegal hallucinogens, you can never tell what's going to happen.

Regardless of your opinion of late term abortions, heres hoping that the new justices on the court stick to their oft-stated mission to rule solely on the constitutionality of an issue rather than legislate from the bench.

Things That Make You Go Hmmmmm?

Does one pursue that which MIGHT BE considered socially reprehensible in order to fulfill one's desire? Is it socially reprehensible if it feels right? Is it wrong to feel that it's right? Does it change how people think about one whether it's right or wrong? Does one give a flying fuck?

I suppose the answers to these questions really depend on whether or not things work out.

Poker Night

Is there a better idea on a New Years holiday than to get a bunch of guys together for a night of food, booze, and cards? I don't think so. Last weekend was Solnal (Lunar New Years), and a bunch of us gathered at my house on Saturday for some poker. I cooked up a bunch of Mexican food and Ian made some chili (and the soju cocktail). The food was damn good if I do say so myself.

All in all, it was a very fun night. Lots of booze, lots of cards, not to mention that I ended up about 70,000 won ahead at the end of the night. Kiwi Glenn and Rob also managed to have a pretty good night as well. Definitely going to have to do this again.

Mexican night. Burritos, tacos, chili, and all the fixins. Mmmmm-mmm good!
